Discovering more efficient ways to store electric energy and developing fast wireless charging solutions for electric vehicles.

Research relevance


This research will lengthen the life cycles of the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and could help various modes of mass transit switch to electric power.

Research summary


As Canada Research Chair in Electric Energy Storage Systems for Transportation Electrification, Dr. Williamson is focused on advanced power electronics solutions for energy storage and management systems, ultracapacitor power management, and plugged and wireless charging/wireless power transfer technologies. The renewal research includes several new interdisciplinary initiatives in the areas of transportation electrification and autonomous e-mobility. The high-level goals of the research are specifically related to power electronic converters for DC battery fast charging, static wireless fast charging, autonomous/in-motion/dynamic wireless charging, and electric energy storage emulators and health-conscious battery management/charging. This research will position Canada as an international leader in e-transportation manufacturing and development.
