Research summary

Severe critical illness is a traumatic, life-altering event for patients and their families. Those who survive it often do not regain the physical or psychological health they enjoyed before the illness. As Canada Research Chair in Critical Illness Outcomes and the Recovery Continuum, Dr. Margaret Herridge seeks to understand the long-term health outcomes of critically ill patients and their families. She also aims to determine how the health care system can be improved to better care for this vulnerable group.

Herridge and her research team are building on her important work on patient outcomes after ICU care. They are working to find ways to improve post-ICU care and the long-term health and well-being of patients who survive critical illnesses. Ultimately, their findings will reduce the burden of critical illness on communities around the world, and will elevate Canada’s profile as a leader in critical care research.
